Piñatas are very popular elements in a party, especially for children’s birthday. They originate from a Mexican tradition and are basically large hollow objects fashioned in papier mache, hung from the ceiling and decorated in festive colors and ornaments. Often they are filled with candy or other goodies and when hit with sticks or baseball bats break to release them to the ground.
Although traditionally piñata are meant to be in the shape of a donkey you can in fact have one in virtually any shape imaginable for your party. Hence most people choose some object relatable to the theme of the party. If the theme is NASCAR racing for example, you could have a car shaped piñata.
Piñatas are great because while being quite colorful and decorative they double up as an activity for the party. It always brings out a lot of laughter and enjoyment when a child is blind folded and spun around, made dizzy and then released to take his swing at the piñata. The children of course love the treats that shower down from it too.
However it is important you take some safety measures when you plan a piñata for your party. Make sure you have enough space for people to gather around it while not being hit by the swinging bat. And it is also a good idea to use a plastic baseball bat to break it than a real one.
The breaking of Piñatas make for a great finale for a party. So be sure to include it into your next celebration.
