Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year and it takes place in the month of Tishri. Tishri is the first month of the Jewish calendar and means "Beginning". Rosh Hashanah commemorates the anniversary of creation and is a day in which the whole world is judged for the coming year. It is a time of restricted rejoicing because celebrations are muted in acknowledgment of the great judgement taking place. It is customary for the observance to take place at the beginning of nightfall on the day before Rosh Hashanah. During Rash Hashanah it is also customary to eat foods, during the evening meals, that symbolize sweetness, blessings and abundance. The Shofar is one of the most visual symbols of Rosh Hashanah. It is used to awaken the heart of every Jew no matter how old to repentance and a closer relationship to God.
