It’s not very likely that your friends, coworkers or family members have actually attended a ‘proper’ tea party, so why not put one on, complete with Tea Party Supplies, and show them what they’ve been missing? To ensure happiness by all mix it up with some wine tasting. Start with your invitations, which should explain in detail what guests should expect, what to bring, and how to behave. In Victoria times, tea party attendees brought their tea cups wrapped specially for the occasion, along with some nibbling treats for the other guests (such as scones, cupcakes or a cake). Then, make sure you have the requisite Tea Party Supplies on hand: a tea pot (china for intimate tea parties, silver for more formal occasions), cups, saucers, spoons, a sugar bowl full of CUBES of sugar (not loose sugar), sugar cube tongs, a tea strainer and food serving utensils. Once your guests start to arrive, seat them at their table, and remind them of the proper ways to have tea. Clinking your tea cup with your spoon is customary, as is swirling your tea around before sipping it. Only milk, not cream, is offered for tea (cream masks the taste of the tea too much) and should only be added after the tea is poured into the cup. Take small amounts of every food offered, and make sure to never have your dirty napkins, linens or plates touch the table. If you need another plate, put the dirty one on a table used just for this purpose, and take another. As for napkins, leave them on your lap; if you need to get up, you’ll be required to leave it on your seat until you return. Once you’ve explained the proper rules for tea time, your guests can sit back and enjoy some truly civilized company.
