If you want to go all-out and have a roaring twenties party, complete with the appropriate Twenties Party Supplies, you’ll need to start with the invitations. Send mysterious letters to each of your invitees, asking them to check the classifieds section of a specific newspaper for details about your twenties-themed party. Then, put an ad out, stating that the secret password to get in to the gig is something like “Jazzy Babe” or “Hoochie Girl”, along with a twenties-inspired costume. Then, place big brutes at the entrance to the party, whose job it is to ask for the password and ‘frisk’ partygoers for guns (remember, in the Twenties gangsters were prevalent in every corner, and usually carried big guns with them). Inside the party, have lots of metal tubs full of ice and gin available (beer wasn’t a commodity in the Twenties, but hard alcohol was), or better yet, fill your bathtub with ice and booze instead (for ‘bathtub gin’). Play 20’s inspired music (such as Duke Ellington or Al Jolson), with the Charleston dance steps posted prominently on the walls, and silent movies in the background (such as the original Great Gatsby, or movies about Al Capone and Bugsy Siegel). You could even host a murder mystery party using this Twenties-inspired theme, by buying one of the readily available kits on the market today. Twenties-inspired decorations could include setting up a speakeasy bar in the corner, model t-ford pictures, art deco prints, aviation memorabilia and fake tabloid newspapers. And don’t forget the finale at midnight, where you can schedule a raid by ‘prohibition agents’.
