Wine has been known the world over for centuries, and is common place at dinner tables worldwide. However, few are aware of the roots and foundations of this symbolic, fruitful and full bodied beverage. The science of wine charts its history into millions of years ago when early scientific records boast grapes were first found 60-million years ago. Afterwards, the first written evidence of this spirit is found in the Old Testament of the King James’ Bible noting that Noah himself planted a vineyard to make wine.
The world’s oldest bottle of wine was found during a homebuilding in Speyer, Germany. Near one of two Roman sarcophaguses that were being resurrected. This bottle was found in 1867 and dates back to approximately 325 A.D.
Further examination of this wine shows the liquid is full of the silt of sediment. The primary filling of the bottle was a thick cloudy mixture which is believed to contain olive oil. Olive oil was used by the Romans as a preservative, looking for the same effect that corks achieve in modern winemaking.
While the primary focus of wine has always been in Europe with Italy, France and Germany having the richest cultures of wine, the United States is formulating a strong reputation for the wineries in California, specifically Napa Valley. Wine has a strong rich history and is commonly used as a symbolic vessel in the Christian church. With all the varieties of wine available, there is certainly something for every palate to enjoy.
